The History of Cupping
While early written records of cupping date from 28 AD, the true origin of cupping remains in obscurity. The belief is that it developed over time from the original use of hollowed animal horns to bamboo cups to the glass, silicone and plastic cups we use today. The therapeutic applications evolved along with the refinement of the cups themselves, and with the cultures that employed cupping as a health care technique.
The Chinese included cupping in surgery to divert blood flow from the surgery site. This eventually developed into a separate therapy with healers treating a variety of conditions.
The Egyptians produced a text on ancient medicine that discussed the use of cupping for conditions such as fever, pain, vertigo, menstruation imbalances, weakened appetite and accelerating the “healing crisis” of disease. From the Egyptians, cupping was introduced to the Greeks and eventually spread to ancient cultures in many countries of Europe and even the Americas.
The 19th century saw European and American doctors widely using cupping in practice and several research papers written about the subject. The 20th century brought about a decline in interest as new technology, drugs and machines came into use. Well into the 1940’s, medical supply companies were promoting the new cupping sets that used mechanical pumps to create the vacuum.
What are the Benefits?
The techniques involved relieve inflammation, sedate the nervous system, move stagnant lymph and blood, hydrate and nourish tissue, shift tissue PH, and can be used on acute and chronic conditions in all ages. ACE Massage Cupping™ is not an irritant to the skin or body. It draws the inflammation out from deep tissues to be released yet does not add to it. The skin can turn red with strong movements, indicating that circulation has been brought to the surface. Increased local blood supply to the muscles and skin will bring nourishment and allow for toxins to be carried away via the lymph. Conditions of chronic and acute pain can be relieved with minimal discomfort and tense muscles softened quickly and easily. It is very effective in releasing restrictions in fascia and scar tissue. The effect on the nervous system is sedating and people often fall into a deep state of relaxation. On a deeper therapeutic level, this nervous system sedation is beneficial for those with high blood pressure, anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, chronic headaches, fibromyalgia and neuralgia to name a few. People have often reported a deep warmth and tingling sensation long after the treatment has ended. Loose, supple, pliable soft tissue is the key to a healthy myofascial muscular system. This increase in pliability equals less injury to your muscular system.

What are the Marks?
The vacuum created by the cup can reach into ~7 layers of tissue from your skin down to your fascia and periosteum depending on the amount of tissue the therapist pumps into the cup. The deepest equates to ~4 inches of tissue in the cup. This amount allows your body to bring muscle debris to the surface by the Interstitial fluid (or tissue fluid) to be discharged by your lymph system. This muscle debris can include toxins, lactic acid, histamines, old blood, old medicines and any byproducts from foods. This is what causes the marks or “cup kiss”. They are also caused by heat generated from the movements. All of this metabolic debris is being brought to the surface and causing a discoloration. The amount of discoloration depends on the amount and type of stagnated debris in that area. They can range from a light red that will disappear quickly to purple in color. These marks are quite spontaneous. This is not a bruise and will dissipate anywhere between a few hours and a few days. It is also unlikely that it will re-occur in the same area when that area is treated in a series.
